chairmen that all look like those guys. now, the chief strategist of romney's campaign, stu stevens, is describing why he lost. he wrote in "the washington post" today, quote, there was a time not so long ago when the problems of the democratic party revolved around being too liberal and too dependent on minorities. obama turned those problems into advantages and rode that strategy to victory. but he was a charismatic african-american president with a billion dollars, no primary, and media that often felt morally conflicted about being critical. how easy is that to replicate? in other words, the election was an anomaly giving republicans little reason to worry in the future. this morning stevens said mitt romney's ideas were right on, as he puts it. he's getting cool, he's right on in his talking. let's listen. >> i think that the ideas carried the day for us and that success that we had, though it obviously wasn't enough to win the race, was based on the candidate mitt romney and on his ideas. >> well, using that '60s language of right on, he isn't quite. he continued the outreach

some romney voters said hey, yeah, we should raise taxes on the rich. it seems there's a passionate fwrup of far right conservatives who are saying we don't want to raise taxes on the rich. and they seem to have an outsized amount of power in this discussion. because they are against compromise. they are super passionate. they will primary people who go against them and vote them out of office. is it that we have this passionate small minority that is kind of holding the whole process hostage to use a word from last term? >> i'm not sure it's a passionate small minority. i mean, it's the majority of the party. it's a core principle for the gop. it's one of the -- really one of the few core principles in kind of the post-cold war and post social issues kind of part of politics right now that brings them all together. it's very important for them to not have high taxes. what we're seeing right now is sort of, i think, and it's been a conjecture, but the orthodoxy on taxes which is very well enforced and policed by groups that, as you say, will primary republicans. the kind of core on

of the public conversation came a few weeks ago when governor romney, the presidential candidate, mentioned the binders of women that he received on his desk to helped him populate his cabinet. and i started thinking about what that binders of women symbolized to me. it was as though governor romney had allowed in -- to find women who were these exotic creatures who were hiding out in places where they were not really obvious. in some ways i actually felt his pain in some ways because when i started writing about the housing market, i found that there was very little conversation about the impact this was having on women. it was this -- as though women were invisible in this conversation. we talked about it first in terms of neighborhoods. we talked about it in terms of color. we haven't really started talking about it in terms of women and there were a lot of numbers that supported a conversation that was specifically how some prime lending and the housing market in particular was relevant to women's experiences. i can give you some of those numbers but what i found was that when we starte

possibility about what maybe is really going on here. fwhak 2004, a guy named mitt romney was the governor of the state of massachusetts. if you don't remember who that is, he was a private equity guy from massachusetts. back in 2004, he was in the middle of his one and only term as governor. the nominee for president was a senator from the same state, john kerry of massachusetts. if he had won the presidential election that year, his senate seat would have become open. so the governor of massachusetts, the republican, mitt romney, would have been able to appoint somebody to fill john kerry's senate seat. the mts legislature totally dominated by democrats was cognizant that the governor would probably pick a republican to fill the seat if kerry got elected president. so the massachusetts state legislature decide d to change the law. they changed the law so that only a special election could fill a vacant seat. until then, the seat would have to be empty. mitt romney tried to veto that new law. but the legislature overrode his veto, thereby stripping mitt romney of his power to choose a rep
